2013 STL Wolfpack Hustle Rock ‘n Roll Marathon Crash Race 10-27-13

October 30, 2013 in Marathon Crash Race, News, Race Results, St. Louis

Credit: Chris Green

Credit: Chris Green

If anyone reading this hasn't done a WPH Marathon Crash Race, you won't understand the rush that comes from blazing through the pitch black city streets at 20+ mph with some of the fastest people who can ride a bike. It was 3:30 a.m. and it was downright chilly in STL. All the usual suspects and a few new faces gathered to crash the "Rock N Roll Marathon". We had a couple out-of-towners come down from Chicago for the race with OG Hustler Zach. Kayce made the announcements through the sickly sounding megaphone and after a quick jaunt through the start/finish line (which that prick cop hated), we waited for the light to turn green and we were off. The race was fast with a lot of turns which made it easy to get lost if you weren't with someone who knew the course (even though we had turnsheets). Max ended up way off course and almost visited Penrose Velodrome in north city, Zach went down on Forest Park Parkway, Kayce was holding out money on Washington Ave for people to grab mid-race right from his hand, there were at least 3 flats, and when it was all said and done, Rob Varmer ended up winning it all by a margin of at least 6 minutes. Kayce then divvied up the prizes that were donated by Jeremy @ Cherokee Street Bikes. The sun was coming up and we were all freezing, exhausted, hungry, and had to avoid hundreds off runners about to run our race course.   Rob Varmer (1st overall, 1st fixed) Chris Vela (2nd overall) (fixed) Andy Grueninger (3rd overall, 1st geared) Tom Brockus (4th overall) (fixed) Zach Slavens (5th overall) (fixed) Courtney  Cushard (6th overall, 1st womens) (geared) Jack Helvey (7th overall) (geared) etc, etc, etc.....   A huge Thank You to everyone who came out to race and especially to Kayce, Chris V, Jack, and Chris Green for putting this all together. And a Super Huge Thank You to Jeremy @ Cherokee Street Bikes for donating the prizes. You all kick ass!!!

Competitor Spotlight: Asia Morris

April 30, 2013 in Los Angeles, Marathon Crash Race, News, Race Events, Race Results, Rider Spotlight

At 22 and with only one race under her belt, Asia Morris took third overall in the geared ladies category at the 2013 Marathon Crash Race. Born and raised in Long Beach, a college roommate inspired her to trade in her beach cruiser for “a little less clunky” bike. It was then that she started riding avidly on Tuesday nights with a group called the Juggernauts in 2008. Asia was busy acquiring her BA from Scripps College in Claremont when she won a sprint race in Riverside in 2010, and only a week ago she competed in her third race in South Korea at King Track placing 2nd. Natural talent is strong with this one.

“So, I guess you could say you're catching me at the beginning of what might be a promising career or just a really fruitful hobby.”

One on One with Asia Morris: 1. What influenced you to pursue racing? Why? I race because I like to surprise myself. I think the scary part about racing is putting yourself out there, believing that you're fast, that maybe, just maybe, you've put in enough time and training to put yourself above the other competitors. I remember the first time I raced, I hadn't planned on it at all. I'd been riding for a couple years but not with the hopes of winning any races. I'd always enjoyed the friendly competition with the guys I rode with weekly, but I'd never thought about having any potential to win. I remember I'd tagged along with my boyfriend at the time to watch the Victoria St. Drag Race in Riverside. There were about forty male competitors, some looked pretty serious, others not so serious, and then I noticed there were only five female competitors. I thought, wow, I've been riding a lot, maybe I could do well. Just the thought of entering the race gave me butterflies, made me almost sick to my stomach, but that could've been the Little Caesars I had just eaten. It was silly, but I won and blew my fears out of the water. I didn't race again until Wolfpack this year where a whole new set of fears waited for me, I didn't exactly blow past them, I mostly crashed into them, twisting my cleat out of place and messing up my knee. I remember falling over before the race even started because I couldn't get my shoe out in time (I'm kind of new to clip less pedals) I got up and bowed to a round of awkward applause. Then my chain fell off. I'm kind of a klutz so it's absolutely amazing that I even placed. I expected top sixteen, but 3rd?! That's crazy. So yea, I race because every time I do well it's a surprise. Even in Korea, I chose not to expect to do well, but just to do my absolute best. I wanted to go on the trip because it seemed like a crazy thing to do, but I figured if I'm not doing things that seem crazy I'm not really living. 2. What have been your results this year in "sanctioned" and "unsanctioned" races? This year I placed 3rd in the Wolfpack Crash Race and 2nd in the Women's Keirin for King of Track in Korea. 3. What do you think about when you train for races? I usually think about how I'm not training hard enough or how Bud's rear wheel is getting farther and farther and farther away from me... We've been training together for a couple months now and I figure, as long as I can keep up with his chill pace that means I'm pushing myself hard enough. But now I think it's time to push myself a little bit harder.   4. What interests do you have outside of cycling? Outside of cycling I'm a creative writer, a visual artist, and sometimes a singer when I'm not paralyzed by shyness. Since graduation, I've showed my work three or four times, in a couple galleries and someone's house, while I just finished up an internship at the Orange County Museum of Art. I'm currently looking for a job in the visual arts and paying the bills as a receptionist. 5. What is your all-time favorite racing moment to this day? Probably when I lost at King of Track. The other cyclist, MJ, kicked my butt by like half a wheel. I wouldn't have wanted the finish to be any different. It was so exciting, and I learned what I need to do differently for my next track race. That's the beautiful thing about racing, you can always lose, but then you just learn, train a little harder, and then go back for more. 6. What are you looking forward to this year whether in "sanctioned" races or "unsanctioned"? I'm looking forward to meeting other female cyclists, hopefully some that I can train with.

October 9, 2012 in Los Angeles, Race Events, Race Results

Megawolf Jon Budinoff took first place over all at the Fortune 700 Series!! At first glance Jon seemed to be in deep concentration, the fire in his eye.. clenched teeth.... but with all that ass whoopin it's easy to forget that Jon was in a serious crash not 3 weeks ago that took him out of the East Coast Messenger Stage Race. With a borken jaw wired shut, Budinoff still kills it. CONGRATS JON!

THANK YOU. Midnight Drag Race 2012

July 30, 2012 in CRAY SHIT, Los Angeles, Midnight Drag Race, Race Events, Race Results

The Tunnel as it was left by the LA cycling community at 4:30AM on July 29th 2012....

The Historic 2nd St. tunnel at approximately 4:30AM just hours after the Midnight Drag Race.

Dear Everyone, THANK YOU for making The Wolfpack Hustle Midnight Drag Race a dream come true. The cycling community in Los Angeles NEVER ever ever ever ceases to amaze me. Never. There is something about people who choose to ride bicycles particularly in Los Angeles... Maybe it is the humbling nature of riding a bicycle on hostile streets that pulls people from every background together under one umbrella to create magical experiences like we did on Saturday night. People have been thanking me for what happened on Saturday, but it feels disingenuous to accept thanks because this was no less than a grass roots community of people that made this event happen. So many people need to be thanked including the 2000+ spectators who treated the historic tunnel and this event with so much respect. The most incredible part was the amount of people who stayed till the end, and picked up trash, rounded up cones and actually left the tunnel cleaner than we found it. Mind blown. Only this LA bicycle community has that kind of grit and energy. Many many people did their part but I’d like to extend special thanks to Sara Hernandez the Downtown LA director for CD14 who brought this concept to the Councilman, to Officer Gordon Helper who volunteered his time for the entire event and for generally being the most awesome cop on the planet, Dorothy Wong and Chris Basset of SoCal Cross Timing, Rick Kleinsmith of TRAFIK, Patrick Miller, Kieron Menzies, Norma Herrera, Taj Johnson, Ben Mook, Manny Gallegos, Gern Trowbridge, Lauren Robison, Mehdi Farsi, Paul Ku, Thomas Forsyth, Raymond Roker, Steve Kelty and so many more listed below. The list of thanks is long and it is INCOMPLETE. Please email me if you volunteered and don’t see your name on this list and please accept my humble apology in advance for neglecting to put you on. If you had a good time on Saturday please thank each one of these people and support these companies when you can. Jon Budinoff takes Feel My Legs I’m a Racer

March 25, 2012 in Race Events, Race Results, Rider Spotlight

Congrats to megawolf Jon Budinoff for destroying the Feel My Legs I'm a Racer event today. One of the most challenging races thrown in Southern California, FML takes riders up 10 of the steepest streets in Los Angeles and at least 2 of the steepest in North America. Through rain and slick, Budinoff handily crushed the competition as seen in this video of the Eldred St. leg... Video below and Full details here.     Big Ups to Matt Ruscigno and the Bike Swarm! crew for throwing this most grueling of races. View Feel My Legs #7 2012 in a larger map

Marathon Crash Race 2012 Results Thanks and Recap

March 23, 2012 in Crash Race Sponsors, Marathon Crash Race, Race Results

THANK YOU

To the Volunteers and Sponsors First of all we want to thank everyone who made this year's Marathon Crash Race happen. With more than 2000 people signing up and hundreds more who showed up just to ride 26 miles of car free streets it was a project that required a large team of dedicated people. We were truly amazed by the efforts of our volunteer team and our sponsors working from registration all the way through to the finish. This was a true collaboration of the people and dedicated small businesses working together to make something great happen. Please see the full credit list below. We love you all. LAPD and the City of Los Angeles We give a big huge special thanks and salute to the LAPD especially Police Officer Gordon Helper for assisting in keeping the riders safe. It was truly a sight to behold. Additionally, Officer Helper championed the cause internally and paved the way for communication between us, LAPD, the Marathon Organizers, the SMPD and the Bureau of Street Services. We would also like to thank Captain Zak, Officer Cirrito, LT Belthius, Commander Scott and Captain Arcos for keeping an open dialog going. The simple fact is, the people of Los Angeles love to ride bicycles and the more that city leaders and agencies do to facillitate cycling, the better our health, environment and communities will become. and now without further adieu...

THE WINNERS

Every year, we make every attempt to provide the most accurate and just results we can. Our biggest challenge is usually in the women's category as there are relatively fewer females racing and typically they arrive one by one among the larger clusters of racers. Sometimes they get lost in the crowd and we depend on video replay from volunteer videographers to capture the finish. As the support from the community grows, we will continue to refine the process. Ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Our review of the footage combined with stills and multiple angles finds the following:   Women's Fixed Gear: 1st Kapri Gonzales (Arizona) 2nd Kelli Samuelson 3rd Becca Cohen Women's Geared 1st Jo Celso (1st Womens Overall) (San Diego) 2nd Sam Bell 3rd Lindsay Nelson 4th Jen Whalen Men's Fixed Gear 1st Edgar "Willo" Juarez (Long Beach) 2nd Scott Piercefield 3rd James Zaldua 4th Henry Grijalva 5th PNUT Men's Geared 1st Robbie Miranda (1st overall) (Chula Vista) 2nd Evan Stade 3rd Tim Mcgee 4th Fabian Vazquez 5th Dave Lettieri Dead F*ckin' Last Tina Pham   More than 2000 people cross Vine and Hollywood on their way to Santa Monica Mikey Wally captures the finish and 2 minutes of the field: Another angle of the finish showing Women's Fixed 1st place and Womens Geared 1-3 Shots from the finish line: Photoset by Adrian Galacia

(please don't hesitate to contact if you were forgotten it was a whirl wind I'm sure I forgot someone) THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INCLUDING YOU.   THE FALSE START explained by Roadblock
This year we had a false start and a lot of people were upset and confused by the decision to re-start at Tang's. What happens usually, is that we have what is called a Rolling Start. The Rolling Start is a moderate paced ride to the course entry that works to allow people to get comfortable rolling in the mass, allowing the stronger riders and competitors to filter up front over the uphills of Sunset Blvd. To prepare for this, I usually drive up to Elysian and drop my car off (for a quick escape afterwards to Santa Monica) then I ride back to Tang's to address the field, give a brief on safety and procedure and start the mass rolling at 4am. This year the plan was actually to delay the start to 4:15 or 4:30 because the LAPD advised that cars could still be on the street even at 4am. The mass began rolling at 3:45am. This way too early as many were caught still preparing and parking and the course was not yet secured. The video replay shows exactly what happened.... The mass filled in a gap up to the cop car and then began surrounding it and moving forward. To the cop this may have looked like the start happened or perhaps he was trying to get ahead of the mass as he intended to escort. A feedback loop happened and people continued rolling. I take full responsibility for this. I foolishly did not foresee this situation happening and I had not placed anyone in charge of preventing such a surge from occurring. It was quite a feeling to spend a couple months meticulously planning for an event and then see it all collapse right before your eyes. I was riding back from Elysian and saw the ride coming up the first hill. At first i thought it was Hern's route marshall group but then it became obvious it was the start. I was pissed, bummed angry emotional.... I tried to be zen about it, took a deep breath, but after calling Hern and hearing how upset he was as well i decided to shut it down. It just wouldnt feel right to hand out dog tags on a false start. I couldnt visualize it happening. People come from out of state, out of the country for this and last year i got a lashing for even starting 4 minutes early. At the end of the day, it was my fault for assuming that people would wait for me to start rolling. People were cold, amped, ready to move. Next year, if there is a next year, i will have a team in place holding people from going. Perhaps a rope or a flag. Something. If the race happens again, this won't happen again. Thanks for understanding.

Race Results: The Midnight Drag Race II

June 4, 2007 in Midnight Drag Race, Race Results

On the night of Saturday, May 5th 2007 the WP crew rolled out our 2nd Midnight Drag Race in Los Angeles. This time the chaos spanned the historic 6th street bridge over the Los Angeles river as the clear and lucid DTLA skyline loomed large in the near distance. About 200 cyclists and spectators kicked it to watch as 68 racers gave their all attempting to qualify for a spot amongst the bracketed head to head competitions. The night was warm and loose with good vibes all around. Yes, this was a competition but it was also for a good cause as $5 entry fees were collected to be donated in full to fallen rider Rebecca to help with her medical bills. The night featured many of the top qualifiers from the first Drag Race running game once again... Top riders included Jack, Troy, Josh, the undefeated Beatriz, Wolfrider1, Gomi, Tanner, Matt R., and others along with some new faces like that of the monstrous Chet Bearclaw, a surprisingly fast Alex (co-conspirator of Ride Arc), Long Beach Fixie Rider Diana, and many others who came down just to have a good time and support the emerging commuter cyclist movement in Los Angeles. Things looked to get interesting with Jack and Tony Z each entering both the Men's Single and Multi-Speed divisions... Jack showing uber-confidence having ridden an additional 100+ mile trek earlier in the day at Redlands. Alas! Tony and Jack's self-imposed challenges proved to be too much to overcome as each were eliminated prior to the finals which meant some unexpected but much welcome new blood in the winners circle. In the end Wolfrider Josh took first place Men's single speed and Team Bearclaw's secret weapon, Chet Bearclaw took first in Men's Multi-Speed Division. No upsets occurred on the Women's side as Beatriz easily handled both Single and Multi-Speed classes maintaining her undefeated record at the Drag Races. The question remains.... will the women of Southern Cali step up to challenge Beatriz??? We shall see. Drag Race 3 is coming up. Prepare your thighs Los Angeles...PRIZES 1st and 2nd place winners for each division were awarded some dope prizes provided by Ambiguous Clothing, XLarge, Orange 20, DRIF DTLA and Biciconcepts.1st place winners for each division received the uniquely printed and much coveted Wolfpack.Hustle dog tag medals... ownership of which indicates the final fucking say-so if you will.THANKS Wolfpack extends much thanks and gratitude to everyone who came down and added to the good times and especially to those who helped keep the event organized and moving along. An extra special shout goes out to "The Coach" (Dennis) for coming through once again with all the necessary equipment, knowledge and insider info to document such a happening... To Cole, Amy, Rasta Raj, and Superfish for keeping time and organizing, the every sexy-thighed Tattiya for counting down the racers, cameraman/commentator Ubrayj02, Sean C and Richard for capturing some excellent footage. A big west-up to "New York" and the entire Ulock mob DTLA for their support and firebreathing antics. And finally, a shout out and thanks to the L.A.P.D. for being so kind as to look the other way and let us have our fun. Wolfpack always promotes respect for the badge.
